NSS Luna · Motorised
Internal blinds shade a room that has already heated up. NSS Luna mounts on the outside of your windows, on a 100 mm pelmet — the smallest pelmet box available — in one clean sheet up to 2.7 m wide with no joins in the fabric.
The short version
NSS Luna outdoor window blinds are motorised fabric blinds that mount on the outside of a window, intercepting sunlight before it reaches the glass. Each blind is custom made in Perth from marine-grade aluminium, runs on a slim 100 mm pelmet, is made to a maximum of 2.7 metres wide by 2.7 metres drop, and is available in woven mesh or 100% blockout fabric.
Also known as exterior window blinds, external window blinds or outdoor blinds for windows. For openings larger than 2.7 m, and for alfresco areas, see NSS Galaxy — it spans up to 4.5 m.
Why outside the glass matters
Sunlight becomes heat the moment it passes through glass. An internal blind sits behind that glass, so the heat is already inside the room — and the pocket of air between blind and window turns into a warm-air trap that radiates back at you all afternoon.
NSS Luna sits in front of the glass. Most of that solar radiation is intercepted at the window face and vented to open air, before it can convert into indoor heat. On Perth's west- and north-facing windows, that difference is what decides the room.
“Shading glass is the best way to reduce unwanted heat gain, as unprotected glass is often the greatest source of heat entering a home.”
The same guide reports that “up to 40% of a home's heating energy can be lost and up to 87% of its heat gained through windows”, and that while direct sun can generate the same heat as a single-bar radiator over every square metre it strikes, “effective shading can block up to 90% of this heat”.
Quoted from YourHome — Shading and YourHome — Glazing, the Australian Government's guide to sustainable homes. YourHome lists external blinds among its recommended shading devices. These are general figures for shading and are not measurements of any Nu Style Shutters product.
Three reasons Perth homeowners choose Luna
Shade the window from outside and the sun's energy is deflected before it becomes indoor heat. Rooms stay cooler for longer, and the air conditioner spends less of the afternoon fighting a losing battle.
Choose a 100% blockout fabric for maximum darkness and daytime privacy — ideal for west-facing bedrooms, media rooms and shift workers. Or choose woven mesh and keep the view and the daylight.
Most external window systems announce themselves with a bulky headbox. Luna runs on a 100 mm pelmet — the smallest pelmet box available — powder-coated from a range that includes the Colorbond® collection.

Where Luna works

Narrow courtyards bounce heat straight back into the house. Shading the glass at the face is what keeps those rooms usable through summer.

First-floor bedrooms and living rooms take the most direct sun and hold the most heat. Wireless remote means no climbing and no cords.

Each blind is made for a single opening, up to 2.7 m wide and 2.7 m drop. Tall glazing is handled with a separate blind to each glazed section.

How it happens
A Nu Style consultant comes to you, measures each window and talks through the options, then puts a written quote together. No obligation, no hard sell.
Pick your fabric — woven mesh for view, 100% blockout for darkness — then the powder-coat colour to match your frames, render or roof.
Every blind is built to your exact measurements at our Western Australian factory — made to order, never pulled off a shelf.
Nu Style installers are employees, not subcontractors. They fit it, test the motor, pair the remote and show you how it runs.
Questions
Outdoor blinds usually means a blind that encloses an alfresco, patio or verandah — the job is turning an outdoor space into a usable room. Outdoor window blinds mount on the outside of a window on the house itself, and the job is stopping heat, glare and light at the glass before it enters the room. NSS Luna is built for the second job. NSS Galaxy is built for the first.
For heat specifically, yes. Sunlight converts to heat once it passes through glass, so an internal blind is always working on heat that is already in the room. External shading intercepts the sun at the window face instead.
The Australian Government's YourHome guide puts it plainly: “Shading glass is the best way to reduce unwanted heat gain, as unprotected glass is often the greatest source of heat entering a home.” It lists external blinds among its recommended shading devices, reports that “up to 87% of” a home's “heat” is “gained through windows”, and notes that “effective shading can block up to 90%” of the heat from direct sun. Those are general figures for shading and are not measurements of any Nu Style Shutters product.
With the woven mesh fabric, yes. HVG Visiontex mesh is designed so you can see out during the day while the fabric cuts glare, heat and up to 95% of UV. If you choose the 100% blockout fabric instead, the blind is opaque and you will not see through it — that option is for darkness and daytime privacy.
The 100% blockout fabric is opaque, so it stops light at the glass rather than letting it spill around an internal blind. That makes it a strong option for west-facing bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and shift workers. As with any external blind, some light can still enter around the edges depending on how the window is framed — your consultant will advise on the best set-up for a bedroom.
Each Luna blind is made to a maximum of 2.7 metres wide by 2.7 metres drop, with no joins in the fabric. That covers the great majority of residential window openings in a single clean sheet. For anything larger, or for an alfresco area, NSS Galaxy is the right product — it spans up to 4.5 m.
Same 100 mm marine-grade aluminium pelmet, same motor, same fabric range — but they are sized and set up for different jobs. Galaxy spans up to 4.5 m and is built to enclose an alfresco area or patio. Luna is capped at 2.7 m wide by 2.7 m drop and is built for the windows on the house itself, where the job is stopping heat and light at the glass. If your opening is bigger than 2.7 m, you want Galaxy.
Yes. Every Luna blind is measured and made for the individual window, so it suits existing homes as readily as new builds. Your consultant will check the reveal, the surrounding wall surface and the nearest power supply at the free measure and quote.
Every Luna blind runs on a 240 V Nu-Style motor with wireless remote control, so there are no cords or cranks. Ask your consultant about grouping several blinds to one remote so a whole elevation drops together.
The frame is marine-grade aluminium with a powder-coated Interpon Textura finish. As with any external fabric blind, we recommend retracting it in severe wind. Your consultant will talk through the right fabric for your exposure at quote stage.
Nu Style Shutters offers up to 5 years' warranty on outdoor blinds. Full terms are set out on the Nu Style warranties page.
